Summertime is here and with summer, we will see an increase in our interactions with stinging pests like wasps, hornets, yellowjackets, and bees.
While these insects can be a painful nuisance to some people, they can also be dangerous to young children, pets, and people with allergies. Many stinging insects may also swarm when their nests or hives are disturbed, and multiple stings pose a significant danger to people and pets.
Threat levels to humans and pets can vary by species and location, and any nest or hive in or around our home or office should be controlled by a licensed, pest management professional.
Property owners should alert their pest control service provider as soon as they observe activity. Often you may see wasps entering the attic through soffits or vents or spot a hive hanging from a tree/bush. You may see bees on the ground such as miner bees, sweat bees, mason bees, leafcutter bees, yellowjackets, and cicada killers are common in Northeast Florida. While some bees/wasps may form solitary nests like mud daubers or miner bees, others can form very large, dangerous colonies such as yellowjackets.
Solitary bees/wasps form single nests, but they often build nests together giving the appearance of a large colony. We once removed over 30 single mud dauber nests in one grouping from a customer’s attic.
Stinging insect activity can be controlled using mechanical and cultural controls, 25b environmentally safe insecticides or with restricted use pesticides designed to kill the insect upon contact.
