Spotlight on the German Cockroach

Blattella germanica (aka the German Cockroach) is found throughout Florida. Interestingly, this cockroach is rarely found away from human activity so it has a symbiotic relationship with humans.

German Cockroaches in Your Home

German cockroaches need warm harborage, and they cannot colonize in cold environments. They have a life cycle of about 100 days (egg, nymph, and adult) but their colonies grow rapidly as they breed continuously and colonies have multiple generations present (think grandparents, parents, children).

German cockroaches will feed on almost anything including food, soap, glue, toothpaste, paper, grease, etc. Reproductive females are very active whereas males spend the majority of their time harboring, even at night. Typically, when we see them scurrying across floors or countertops in our kitchens at night, we are seeing reproductive females.

Additional Information

German cockroaches are known disease vectors and they spread 33 different strains of bacteria, six types of parasitic worms, and at least seven other pathogens. Their fecal droppings, exoskeleton body parts, and saliva cause allergic reactions in many people and especially children. E. coli and Salmonella are commonly spread by german cockroaches.

German cockroaches are great hitchhikers and we often bring them into our homes/offices from grocery stores, warehouses, farmer markets, and shipping boxes. Yes, you can have a clean home and still become infested with german cockroaches.

If you suspect you have a german cockroach problem, you should know the off-the-shelf chemical sprays will rarely work and in fact, it may make matters worse.

Call 360PestControl

360PestControl can assess the level of infestation in your home/office and develop a treatment strategy to completely remove the colony, regardless of the size of the infestation. Customers should understand removing a colony of german cockroaches is rarely accomplished with a one-time, chemical spray. In fact, chemical sprays will not exterminate a substantial colony. Also, german cockroaches are often resistant to common chemicals used by many pest control companies.

If you have german cockroaches, don’t fool around or try to get the cheapest price. Your health is dependent upon safely removing the colony. Contact us at (904) 637-1109 to request our pest control services today!
